Northumberland #47 - Embleton Bay from Dunstanburgh Castle
Northumberland #47 - Embleton Bay from Dunstanburgh Castle
Almost the reverse view of Northumberland #7. Taken from the walls of Dunstanburgh Castle, you can't quite see Graymare Rock (obscured by the clifftop in the foreground) but you can now understand why the castle was positioned here.
This view looks north up the sweep of Embleton Bay, towards Bamburgh and Holy Island. The promontory gives an almost 180 degree view, allowing the castle's denizens plenty of advance warning of intruders.
Taken as sundown approached on a sunny March afternoon, I love the way the low light casts defining shadows of the walls, dunes and grass clumps, whilst the cloudscape allows patches of sun through, dappling the ground.
If you look closely, The Cheviot can be seen peeping through in the distance at the left hand side of the horizon.
